Outdoor Provision
Our outdoor learning offer is a fundamental part of our curriculum and plays a significant role in promoting pupils’ personal development. It is carefully designed and sequenced to ensure that all children, over time, develop the confidence, resilience and independence they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
Through a wide range of meaningful, hands-on experiences, pupils develop a strong sense of responsibility and respect for the world around them. For example, by caring for our chickens, children learn empathy and commitment, while work within our polytunnel—growing fruit, vegetables and herbs—develops their understanding of sustainability, healthy living and patience. As a result, pupils take increasing ownership of their learning and demonstrate pride in their contributions.
Our outdoor environment, including the outdoor classroom, pond, bug hotel, wildflower areas and herb gardens, provides rich opportunities for exploration and enquiry. Outdoor learning is embedded across the curriculum and is carefully planned to build knowledge and skills progressively, particularly within science, geography and environmental awareness. Fieldwork and regular access to the local area, including Newton Park, the nearby brook and the Manchester Canal, ensure that learning is rooted in real-life contexts. Over time, pupils develop strong observational skills, curiosity and a deeper understanding of their local environment.
Forest School is a key strength of our provision, led by a qualified Level 3 practitioner and offered four evenings per week. These sessions are inclusive and accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, with appropriate support in place to ensure full participation. Through these experiences, pupils learn to assess and manage risk, solve problems collaboratively and persevere when faced with challenges. As a result, they demonstrate increasing resilience, independence and confidence.
Our carefully structured break and lunchtime offer further supports pupils’ personal development. Zoned areas of play allow children to make purposeful choices about how they spend their time, whether engaging in physical activity, collaborative games or quieter social interactions. Activities such as the daily mile trail, gym equipment, easy rollers and team games promote physical health, coordination and perseverance, while opportunities such as table tennis, bowling and large-scale games encourage cooperation and positive social behaviour. This consistent approach results in high levels of engagement, positive behaviour and strong relationships between pupils.
For our youngest learners, high-quality outdoor provision within our EYFS enables children to explore, create and develop physically in a stimulating and well-resourced environment. These early experiences lay the foundations for confident, independent learners.
Across all aspects of our outdoor provision, pupils benefit from a coherent and inclusive approach that ensures equal access for all. Over time, children develop the skills, attitudes and understanding that contribute to their overall wellbeing and success. This is evident in pupils’ positive attitudes, their ability to work collaboratively and their readiness to embrace new challenges. Our outdoor learning provision not only enhances the curriculum but also equips pupils with the cultural capital and personal qualities they need for future success.
