English
At Park Road Academy Primary School, we want all children to enjoy becoming writers. Our writing curriculum is designed to provide a broad and balanced education that meets the needs of all pupils. It offers opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident and successful writers, with high aspirations, who understand how to make a positive contribution to their community and the wider society.
We place great importance on fostering a love of language and communication, ensuring that every child is equipped with the skills they need to express themselves clearly and creatively.
Our English Lead at Park Road Academy is Mrs Taylor, who is also our Deputy Headteacher and is passionate about ensuring high-quality English teaching and learning across the school.
Curriculum Intent
Our writing curriculum is carefully designed to ensure that all pupils regardless of their needs, abilities or background become fluent, confident writers who develop their own unique voice. We use the Ready Steady Write programme across EYFS, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 to provide a consistent, ambitious and well-sequenced approach to writing.
This approach is rooted in the understanding that high-quality spoken language underpins successful writing. Through structured talk, drama and purposeful vocabulary exploration, pupils are given regular opportunities to rehearse, organise and articulate their ideas before writing. This ensures that children develop both the language and confidence needed to communicate effectively.
The curriculum is built around high-quality, vocabulary-rich texts, which provide meaningful contexts and inspire pupils to write for a clear purpose and audience. Carefully sequenced units support pupils to build knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and text structures over time, enabling them to write with increasing accuracy, fluency and sophistication.
Through a clear teaching sequence of immersion, analysis, planning and writing, pupils are explicitly taught how to construct and refine their writing. Regular opportunities for modelled, shared and independent writing ensure that all learners are supported and challenged to achieve well.
Overall, our curriculum is designed to develop confident, articulate pupils who can express themselves clearly and creatively, preparing them for the next stage of their education and beyond.
Curriculum Implementation
Our writing curriculum is implemented through a carefully structured and progressive approach, ensuring that pupils build a secure and coherent knowledge base in literacy as they move from EYFS through to Key Stage 2. Using the Ready Steady Write programme, we provide a consistent teaching sequence that enables pupils to develop writing skills systematically over time.
Each unit is driven by high-quality, vocabulary-rich texts, which immerse pupils in language and provide meaningful contexts for writing. Learning is sequenced to move from reading and exploring texts, to gathering vocabulary, analysing structure and grammar, and then planning, drafting and refining writing. This clear progression ensures that pupils develop both the technical skills and the creativity required to write effectively.
Oracy is central to our implementation. Through structured talk, drama and rehearsal, pupils are given opportunities to articulate ideas, practise new vocabulary and develop sentence structures before writing. This supports all learners, particularly those with additional needs, to organise their thinking and write with greater confidence and clarity.
The curriculum places strong emphasis on explicit teaching of grammar, punctuation and transcription skills, which are revisited and built upon over time. Pupils are supported through modelled, shared and guided writing before moving towards independent application, ensuring both support and challenge for all.
We foster a culture where writing is valued and celebrated. Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their work, writing with increasing accuracy, fluency and adaptability for a range of audiences and purposes. Through regular opportunities to write at length and across the curriculum, children develop stamina, confidence and a genuine enjoyment of writing.
As a result, pupils become fluent, enthusiastic writers who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and able to communicate effectively in the wider world.
Curriculum Impact
The impact of our English curriculum is reflected in what pupils know, remember and can do over time. Pupils develop a secure understanding of writing across a range of genres and can recall and apply key knowledge of grammar, punctuation and vocabulary with increasing accuracy. They build and retain a rich bank of vocabulary, which they use effectively to enhance their writing and communicate meaning clearly.
As pupils progress through the school, they are able to organise their ideas coherently, adapt their writing for different purposes and audiences, and write with growing fluency and stamina. They demonstrate a clear understanding of text structures and language features, drawing on these independently in their own work.
Assessment is ongoing and informs teaching. We use pupil voice, book looks, lesson observations and independent writing outcomes to evaluate how well pupils are embedding and retaining key knowledge and skills. Writing is assessed against National Curriculum objectives and tracked using the FFT system to monitor progress and attainment over time.
The quality of pupils’ work evidences pride and high expectations. Writing is celebrated across the school through displays and published pieces, reflecting pupils’ ability to produce high-quality outcomes. As a result, pupils leave primary school as confident, knowledgeable writers who can effectively apply their skills across the curriculum and in preparation for the next stage of their education.
