Emotional Based School Non-Attendance
At Park Road Academy Primary School, we believe that excellent attendance, inclusion and safeguarding are closely connected. Every child deserves to feel safe, valued, understood and supported so they can thrive both academically and emotionally. Working in partnership with families and with Trafford Council, we take a proactive and inclusive approach to supporting attendance and wellbeing.
Attendance Support Pathways
We recognise that attendance difficulties can happen for many reasons and that early support is essential. Our approach focusses on understanding barriers rather than simply monitoring absence.
We:
- monitor attendance carefully to identify concerns early
- contact families quickly where support may be needed
- work collaboratively with parents and carers to create supportive attendance plans
- provide pastoral support and regular check-ins for pupils
- adapt provision where appropriate to reduce anxiety and improve engagement
- celebrate positive attendance and improved attendance journeys
Our aim is always to build strong relationships with families so that children feel confident returning to school and maintaining regular attendance.
Emotionally Based School Non-Attendance (EBSNA)
At Park Road Academy, we understand that some pupils may experience anxiety or emotional difficulties linked to school attendance. We use the Trafford Council EBSNA tool to help identify barriers, assess needs and create supportive, child-centred plans.
Support may include:
- graduated reintegration plans
- safe spaces and trusted adults
- reduced anxiety transitions
- wellbeing check-ins
- sensory or emotional regulation support
- family meetings and collaborative planning
- referrals to outside agencies where needed
We work closely with pupils and families to ensure children feel heard, supported and emotionally safe in school.
SEND Safeguarding Adaptations
We recognise that children with SEND may experience additional vulnerabilities and may require adapted safeguarding approaches. Staff receive regular training to ensure safeguarding procedures are inclusive and accessible for all pupils.
Adaptations may include:
- visual supports and simplified communication
- additional transition support
- personalised behaviour and regulation strategies
- trusted adult systems
- sensory adjustments
- adapted online safety teaching
- increased pastoral monitoring where appropriat
We ensure all pupils understand how to seek help, express worries and access support in ways that meet their individual needs.

Vulnerable Pupil Support
Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. We provide targeted support for vulnerable pupils and families through:
- pastoral interventions
- nurture and wellbeing support
- safeguarding check-ins
- mental health support
- support for young carers
- support during family change or bereavement
- attendance and inclusion mentoring
- close partnership working with external professionals
We believe that early intervention and strong relationships are key to helping children feel secure, confident and ready to learn.
Early Help and Multi-Agency Support
Where families may benefit from additional support, we work closely with Trafford Council and partner agencies to provide early help at the earliest opportunity.
This may include:
- Early Help referrals
- Strengthening families/ Trafford Team Together
- health and wellbeing services
- SEND support services
- attendance support services
- family support and parenting guidance
We believe in working alongside families with empathy, respect and understanding to achieve the best outcomes for every child.
Our Inclusive Safeguarding Approach
Exceptional safeguarding means ensuring every child feels:
- safe
- included
- listened to
- respected
- supported to succeed
At Park Road Academy, we are proud of our inclusive culture where attendance, wellbeing and safeguarding are everyone’s responsibility. Through proactive intervention, strong family partnerships and close collaboration with local services, we strive to remove barriers and help every child flourish.
