Spanish

We aim for children to feel confident in their ability to use all language skills. By advancing their listening, reading, speaking, writing, and grammar in Spanish, we set the foundation for success in secondary school language learning.

We aspire for children to acquire a range of language skills, such as understanding cognates and using dictionaries. These skills are transferable to other modern foreign languages.

We want children to grasp essential grammatical concepts, phonics, and vocabulary, with a focus on regularly revisiting key vocabulary to ensure retention.

We hope for children to gain a good understanding of Spanish culture and its significance as a global language.

Above all, we aim for children to develop a passion for learning languages, encouraging them to continue their journey in language studies.

Children in Reception and Years 1 and 2 can join the Spanish Language Club, where they learn the basics of Spanish through songs and games with Mrs. Irving.

Our Curriculum Intent

At Park Road Academy Primary School, our intent is to provide a relevant, broad, and vibrant Spanish curriculum that inspires and excites our KS2 pupils. We aim to develop confident and enthusiastic learners who can effectively communicate in Spanish. Our curriculum is designed to focus on the four key language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. By incorporating the three pillars of language learning—vocabulary, grammar, and phonics—in an age-appropriate manner and through engaging and diverse topics, we lay the foundation for future language learning and support overall academic achievement.

Implementation

Our Spanish curriculum is implemented through a structured yet flexible approach that ensures comprehensive language education. Each year, every class focuses on three main topics, providing depth and context to the language learning process. We use a variety of teaching methods and resources to cater to different learning styles, including interactive activities, storytelling, songs, and technology-enhanced learning tools. Regular assessments and feedback are integral to our approach, allowing us to tailor support and challenge to meet the needs of all pupils. Collaboration with native speakers and cultural activities further enrich the learning experience, bringing the language to life. Emphasis is placed on the three pillars of language learning— vocabulary, grammar, and phonics—to build a strong linguistic foundation.

Impact

The impact of our Spanish curriculum is evident in the enthusiasm and confidence of our pupils in using the language. By the end of KS2, our pupils will have a solid foundation in Spanish, with a strong grasp of basic grammar, vocabulary, and phonics, and the ability to listen, speak, read, and write in Spanish. This foundation not only prepares them for further language study but also enhances their overall cognitive and academic skills. Pupils’ engagement with Spanish helps to improve their performance in other subjects, fosters cultural awareness, and promotes a love for lifelong learning. Our comprehensive approach ensures that pupils leave Park Road Academy with a valuable skill set and an appreciation for the richness of language and culture.
