Sustainability
What Does Climate Change Mean to Park Road Academy?
At Park Road Academy Primary School, we believe that small actions can lead to big changes. Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing our planet, and we recognise the important role education plays in helping children understand, protect and care for the world around them.
For us, sustainability is not simply something we teach; it is something we actively practise, promote and embed within everyday school life. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact, protecting biodiversity, conserving natural resources and inspiring our children to become responsible, environmentally conscious citizens.
Our Climate Action Plan 2025–2030 sets out our ambitions across four key areas: Decarbonisation, Adaptation and Resilience, Biodiversity, and Climate Education and Green Skills. Through these priorities, we are working towards a greener, more sustainable school environment while preparing our children with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to make a positive difference.
We are particularly proud of our outdoor learning environment, which includes our school pond, wildlife habitats, pollinator gardens, growing areas, composting facilities and our much-loved school chickens, which have been part of Park Road life for over a decade. These opportunities allow children to experience sustainability first-hand, developing an appreciation of nature and an understanding of how their actions can protect it.
Pupil voice and leadership are at the heart of our approach. Our Key Stage Two Pupil Sustainability Leadership Team plays an active role in driving environmental improvements across the school. With their own action plan, dedicated corridor display and pupil suggestions board, they encourage the entire school community to share ideas, take responsibility and contribute to meaningful change.
We also recognise that our responsibility extends beyond the school gates. By encouraging walking, cycling and scooting to school, reducing food waste, promoting recycling and participating in litter-picking activities, we aim to develop sustainable habits that children can carry into their homes and wider communities.
Ultimately, our ambition is not only to make Park Road Academy a greener school today, but to empower the next generation to become informed, compassionate and proactive custodians of our planet.
Our School. Our Community. A Greener Future.
