See us in Action!

At Park Road Academy, we believe that our children have an important role to play in tackling climate change and protecting our planet for future generations. Our Pupil Sustainability Leadership Team, made up of representatives from across our Key Stage Two classes, takes an active role in leading environmental initiatives and inspiring positive change throughout our school community.

The team has developed its own Sustainability Action Plan, identifying key priorities and setting achievable goals to make Park Road a greener, more environmentally responsible school. From organising litter-picking activities and encouraging recycling to promoting energy conservation, reducing food waste, protecting wildlife habitats and supporting sustainable travel, our pupil leaders are passionate about making a real difference. They also champion our school gardening projects, water conservation initiatives and the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling everyday materials.

To celebrate their work and encourage whole-school involvement, the team has a dedicated Sustainability Display in our school corridor, showcasing their current projects, achievements and the positive impact of their actions. Alongside this, a Sustainability Suggestions Board gives every child in school a voice, inviting them to share ideas and contribute to making our school more sustainable. Through teamwork, pupil leadership and meaningful action, our children develop confidence, responsibility, environmental awareness and an understanding that they have the power to influence change. At Park Road Academy, sustainability is not simply something we learn about in the classroom; it is something our children actively lead, live and champion every day.

Our Sustainability Leads are Miss Hart, Mrs Sidwell and Mr McConville (sitemanager).

Growing Our Own

At Park Road Academy, we believe that sustainability begins with understanding and caring for the world around us. Through growing our own fruit, vegetables and herbs in our school gardens and polytunnel, children develop first-hand knowledge of where food comes from and the importance of sustainable food production. Growing our own produce helps children understand how we can reduce food miles, minimise packaging and make environmentally responsible choices. From planting seeds and nurturing crops to harvesting and enjoying the food they have grown, children develop valuable life skills, including patience, responsibility, teamwork and resilience. These experiences also encourage healthy eating, an appreciation of seasonal produce and a greater understanding of the natural world. By connecting learning with real-life experiences, we empower our children to become environmentally conscious citizens who recognise that even small actions can make a positive difference to our planet.

Protecting Biodiversity

We are committed to creating a sustainable environment where nature can thrive. Our wildlife pond and bug hotels play an important role in supporting biodiversity by providing safe habitats for a variety of insects, amphibians and other wildlife. These natural spaces help children understand the importance of protecting ecosystems, encouraging biodiversity and maintaining the delicate balance of our environment. Through observing wildlife, exploring habitats and investigating life cycles, children develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and the vital role that even the smallest creatures play within it. Our pond and bug hotels provide valuable opportunities for hands-on learning, fostering curiosity, responsibility, respect for living things and an appreciation of conservation. By actively caring for these habitats, our children learn that sustainability is not just about protecting our planet today, but ensuring that wildlife and natural environments continue to flourish for future generations.

Saving Water – Every Drop Counts

We recognise that conserving water is an important part of protecting our planet and creating a more sustainable future. By installing water butts around our school grounds, we collect and store rainwater that can be reused to water our plants, flowers, fruit, vegetables and herbs. This simple but effective initiative helps us reduce our reliance on mains water, minimise waste and make responsible use of natural resources.

Through this practical approach to sustainability, our children learn about the importance of water conservation, the water cycle and the impact our everyday choices can have on the environment. Children are encouraged to take responsibility for using water wisely, developing valuable life skills and an understanding that natural resources should never be taken for granted.

By making every drop count, we are empowering our children to become environmentally responsible citizens who recognise that small, thoughtful actions can make a lasting difference to our planet.

Reducing Food Waste

We are committed to reducing food waste and encouraging our children to make sustainable, healthy choices every day. Through our lunchtime food waste initiatives, we encourage children to think carefully about the food they take, appreciate the resources involved in producing it and understand the environmental impact of throwing food away. We also provide a fruit stall that is accessible to all children throughout the school day, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy snack whenever they need one. This initiative promotes healthy eating, reduces unnecessary food waste and encourages children to develop positive attitudes towards food and nutrition. By helping children understand the journey of food from farm to fork, we develop their awareness of sustainability, responsible consumption and the importance of valuing our natural resources. Through these everyday practices, we empower our children to recognise that small changes in how we use and appreciate food can make a meaningful difference to our environment and our school community.

Sustainable Travel

We actively encourage our children and families to make environmentally friendly travel choices by cycling and scooting to school whenever possible. Choosing active travel instead of travelling by car helps to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and minimise traffic congestion around our school, contributing to a cleaner, greener and healthier community. Beyond the environmental benefits, cycling and scooting promote physical fitness, independence, confidence and positive mental wellbeing, helping children develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime.

Through our commitment to sustainable travel, we also teach children the importance of road safety, personal responsibility and making informed choices that positively impact both themselves and the world around them. By encouraging our school community to embrace active travel, we are empowering our children to recognise that even small changes to their daily routines can make a significant difference in protecting our planet for future generations.

Caring for Our Environment – Litter Picking

We encourage our children to take pride in their surroundings and understand the importance of keeping our school and local environment clean, safe and sustainable. Through regular litter-picking activities around our school grounds, children take an active role in protecting the environment, reducing pollution and preventing waste from harming wildlife and natural habitats. These practical experiences help children develop a greater awareness of the impact litter has on our planet and the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling wherever possible. Litter picking also promotes teamwork, responsibility, respect and a sense of belonging, empowering children to make a positive contribution to their school community. By taking ownership of their environment, our children learn that sustainability is everyone's responsibility and that even the smallest actions can make a meaningful difference. Through these initiatives, we aim to inspire environmentally conscious citizens who take pride in protecting and preserving the world around them for future generations.

Our School Chickens – Over a Decade of Sustainability, Responsibility and Life Skills

At Park Road Academy, we are incredibly proud to have kept chickens as part of our school community for over 10 years, demonstrating our long-standing commitment to sustainability, outdoor learning and developing essential life skills. Our chickens provide a wonderful opportunity for children to experience animal care and responsible living first-hand. By helping to care for them, children develop an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of animal welfare and the role animals can play in sustainable food production. Collecting fresh eggs helps children appreciate the journey of food from source to plate, while demonstrating how locally produced food can reduce packaging and transportation needs. Our chickens also provide valuable opportunities for children to develop responsibility, empathy, patience, teamwork and commitment as they learn about feeding, cleaning and caring for living creatures. Through these experiences, children explore life cycles, healthy eating and the importance of respecting the natural world. Caring for our chickens encourages independence, nurtures compassion and helps children understand that sustainability involves making thoughtful choices about how we care for animals, use natural resources and protect our environment. For more than a decade, our chickens have been much more than school pets; they have been an important part of life at Park Road Academy, inspiring generations of children to become responsible, caring and environmentally aware citizens.
