Global Citizens
Our commitment to developing global citizens sits at the heart of life at Park Road Academy. We believe that every child should leave primary school with a strong understanding of the wider world, a sense of responsibility towards others and the confidence to make a positive difference, both locally and globally.
Being a global citizen at Park Road Academy Primary School means helping children to understand diversity, respect different cultures and perspectives and develop empathy for people whose lives may be very different from our own. It is about nurturing kindness, fairness and a growing awareness of global issues such as inequality, sustainability and human rights, in ways that are meaningful and appropriate for young learners.
At Park Road Academy, this work is led by our dedicated Global Citizens Champions, alongside an enthusiastic pupil team who play an active role in promoting awareness and driving initiatives across the school. Through assemblies, themed events and curriculum links, pupils are encouraged to think beyond their immediate environment and reflect on how their actions can impact others.
We are particularly proud of our links with Uganda, where staff have had the opportunity to work alongside colleagues supporting children’s learning in the Lighthouses and delivering professional development for teachers. These experiences have strengthened our understanding of global education and allowed us to build meaningful connections with inspiring individuals who are committed to improving the lives of others. As a result, our pupils gain real insight into different communities and develop a deeper appreciation of both challenges and opportunities across the world.
Global citizenship is carefully woven throughout our curriculum. Whether through geography, PSHE or wider enrichment, pupils explore global themes, learn about different cultures and develop the skills to think critically and compassionately. Regular assemblies help to raise awareness of global issues and celebrate diversity, while encouraging pupils to reflect on their role in creating a fairer world.
As part of our commitment to languages and cultural understanding, we are currently seeking to establish a partnership with a Spanish-speaking school to enrich our Modern Foreign Languages provision. This will provide pupils with authentic opportunities to communicate, collaborate and build relationships beyond their own community.
Through these experiences, our children develop into thoughtful, informed and active global citizens—equipped not only with knowledge, but with the values and motivation to make a positive difference in the world.

Park Road Academy in Uganda – Making a Difference Through Education
A team from Park Road Academy had the privilege of travelling to Uganda to share our expertise, support fellow educators and experience first-hand the life-changing work taking place within local communities.
During our visit, we delivered professional development sessions for Ugandan teachers, sharing effective teaching strategies, classroom practice and approaches to supporting children's learning. We also worked directly with children, delivering lessons and creating opportunities to learn together, exchange ideas and celebrate the universal power of education.
A particularly moving part of our visit was learning about the extraordinary work of Hope for Justice, an international charity dedicated to ending modern slavery and human trafficking, protecting vulnerable children and supporting survivors to rebuild their lives.
We learnt about the charity's Lighthouses, which provide safe, nurturing environments for children who have experienced trafficking, exploitation or are at significant risk. These centres offer much more than shelter: children receive trauma-informed care, counselling, medical support, education, life skills and opportunities to experience the joy of childhood. Where it is safe and appropriate, Hope for Justice works towards reuniting children with their families and supporting their successful reintegration into education and community life.
We had the privilege of meeting adults and children and listening to their personal journeys. Hearing their experiences, challenges and hopes for the future was both humbling and deeply moving, reinforcing the importance of safeguarding, compassion and access to education.
Our team also spent a day visiting communities in Uganda's informal settlements, meeting women's self-help groups and the dedicated caseworkers supporting vulnerable children and families. We learnt how Hope for Justice works alongside communities to tackle the root causes of exploitation, including poverty and family vulnerability. Through women's self-help groups, economic empowerment, parenting support and child protection education, the charity helps families build greater stability and resilience. Its outreach and casework also help children access education, reconnect with safe family environments and develop opportunities for a brighter future.
This experience reinforced our belief that education is not simply about academic achievement; it is about opportunity, dignity, protection and hope. It reminded us of the responsibility we share as educators to champion every child's right to learn, feel safe and fulfil their potential.
At Park Road Academy, we believe that being an exceptional school also means looking beyond our own classrooms, learning from others, sharing our expertise and making a positive contribution to the wider world. Our visit to Uganda was a powerful example of education bringing people together and the difference that compassion, collaboration and opportunity can make to children's lives.

International Week – Celebrating Cultures and Broadening Horizons
For over 15 years, International Week has been a much-loved tradition at Park Road Academy, reflecting our commitment to providing children with exceptional opportunities to explore the world beyond their own community. Each year, our children embark on an exciting journey around the globe, travelling between different countries using their very own passports as they discover the rich diversity of cultures, customs and traditions. Learning comes alive through immersive experiences, including tasting traditional foods, participating in cultural dances, listening to guest speakers and exploring the languages, celebrations and ways of life of people across the world. International Week is about much more than discovering new places; it is about broadening horizons, challenging stereotypes, celebrating diversity and developing respect, curiosity and understanding of others. By introducing children to different cultures from an early age, we nurture empathy, promote inclusion and help them recognise both the differences that make us unique and the shared values that connect us. At Park Road Academy, we believe that education should prepare children not only for academic success, but also to become thoughtful, respectful and responsible global citizens. International Week is a wonderful example of how our enrichment offer creates lasting memories, inspires curiosity and helps every child develop a deeper understanding of the world in which they live.
Multicultural Markets – Celebrating Diversity and Bringing Communities Together
For nearly 20 years, Park Road Academy has proudly hosted its annual Multicultural Markets, a much-loved tradition that brings together children, families, staff and our wider community to celebrate the wonderful diversity of cultures and traditions that enrich our school. Our markets provide a vibrant opportunity for families to share their cultural heritage through an exciting variety of experiences, from preparing and selling delicious traditional foods and culinary delights to showcasing beautiful calligraphy, traditional children's toys, games, crafts and cultural activities from around the world. The markets are more than simply a celebration of food and traditions; they are an opportunity to strengthen community connections, promote cultural understanding, celebrate our differences and recognise the values that unite us. Children have the opportunity to experience different cultures first-hand, ask questions, develop curiosity and learn directly from the families and communities around them. At Park Road Academy, we believe that embracing diversity and creating a genuine sense of belonging are fundamental to an exceptional education. Our Multicultural Markets reflect our commitment to inclusion, mutual respect and preparing children to grow into open-minded, compassionate and respectful global citizens, while celebrating the rich cultural heritage of our school community.
