Prevent
At Park Road Academy Primary School, we are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all pupils. As part of this commitment, we recognise our statutory duty under Section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015 to have due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism. This is known as the Prevent Duty.
Our approach is underpinned by our school values of respect, inclusion, resilience, and critical thinking. We aim to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment where pupils feel secure, valued, and able to express themselves openly. Through a broad and balanced curriculum, we actively promote fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Curriculum and Learning
We equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to recognise and manage risk, think critically, and challenge extremist ideas. Through PSHE, Relationships Education, assemblies, and cross-curricular opportunities, pupils learn about diversity, online safety, and the importance of respectful dialogue. We ensure that learning is age-appropriate and empowers pupils to make informed, safe choices.
Staff Training and Awareness
All staff receive regular safeguarding and Prevent training, ensuring they are confident in identifying signs of vulnerability to radicalisation and understand the procedures for reporting concerns. Staff are vigilant and proactive in maintaining a culture of safeguarding at all times.
Safeguarding and Referral
Concerns about a pupil’s welfare, including potential vulnerability to radicalisation, are managed in line with our safeguarding policy. The Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) works closely with external agencies, including the local authority and Channel programme, where appropriate, to ensure early intervention and support.
Online Safety
We recognise the significant role of the internet in radicalisation. Robust filtering and monitoring systems are in place, and pupils are taught how to stay safe online, identify harmful content, and report concerns. Digital literacy and resilience are key priorities within our curriculum.
Partnership with Parents and the Community
We work in partnership with parents, carers, and the wider community to promote shared values and safeguard our pupils. We encourage open communication and provide guidance to families on keeping children safe from online and offline risks.
Commitment to Inclusion
We celebrate diversity and challenge all forms of discrimination. Our inclusive ethos ensures that every child feels a strong sense of belonging. By fostering respect and understanding, we actively reduce the risk of marginalisation, which can be a contributing factor to vulnerability.
Monitoring and Review
Our Prevent practices are regularly reviewed as part of our safeguarding procedures to ensure they remain effective, current, and aligned with national guidance and Ofsted expectations.
At Park Road Academy Primary School, safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. Through vigilance, education, and strong partnerships, we are committed to protecting our pupils and preparing them to be safe, responsible, and respectful members of society.
