Toilet Training Support

Toilet Training and Independence

At Park Road Academy Primary School, we understand that learning to use the toilet independently is an important part of a child’s development and growing confidence. In line with the Government’s Best Start in Life guidance and the school readiness recommendations, we work closely with families to support children in developing self-care skills in a positive, sensitive and developmentally appropriate way.

Toilet training is a learning process that takes time, patience and consistency. Government guidance highlights that most children benefit from beginning toilet learning between 18 and 30 months, helping to support healthy bladder and bowel development and preparing them for increasing independence as they approach school age.

We recognise that every child develops at their own pace. Some children, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), medical needs or additional developmental needs, may require adapted approaches, additional support or more time. We are committed to working inclusively with families and professionals to ensure that no child or family feels judged or disadvantaged. Our approach is always supportive, respectful and centred around the individual needs of the child.

In our EYFS environment, we encourage:

  • Positive and calm toileting routines
  • Independence skills such as handwashing, dressing and self-care
  • Close partnership working with parents and carers
  • Consistent encouragement and praise
  • Sensitivity to children’s emotional wellbeing and confidence
  • Individual support plans where needed for children with additional needs

We understand that accidents are a normal part of learning and support children with care, dignity and reassurance.

Guidance for Parents at Home

We encourage families to:

  • Begin toilet learning gradually and positively
  • Establish consistent routines at home
  • Encourage children to recognise when they need the toilet
  • Choose clothing that children can manage independently
  • Celebrate progress and avoid pressure or punishment
  • Speak with us if additional support or advice is needed

By working together, we can help children develop confidence, independence and important self-care skills that support a smooth transition into Reception and beyond.
