EYFS Framework & Development Matters
EYFS Statutory Framework
The Early Years Foundation Stage Framework provides the statutory foundation for our EYFS provision and ensures that every child receives high-quality care, learning and development opportunities within a safe and nurturing environment. At Park Road Academy Primary School the framework is embedded into daily practice and drives our commitment to delivering an ambitious curriculum that prepares children for both school and lifelong learning. We place a strong emphasis on developing confident communicators, independent learners and emotionally secure children through carefully planned experiences that balance adult-led teaching with purposeful child-initiated play. Our practitioners create enabling environments that encourage exploration, critical thinking and problem-solving, while maintaining consistently high expectations for all children. The framework also supports our rigorous approach to safeguarding, wellbeing and inclusion, ensuring that every child is known, valued and supported as an individual. By combining expert knowledge, reflective practice and strong partnerships with families, we create a stimulating and inspiring early years experience where children thrive academically, socially and emotionally.

Development Matters
At Park Road Academy we use the non-statutory guidance of Development Matters to support our curriculum design, teaching, assessment and understanding of child development across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Development Matters provides a clear framework of how children typically learn and develop from birth to age five and enables practitioners to build a secure understanding of the unique developmental journey of every child.
We recognise that children develop rapidly in the early years and that high-quality interactions, secure relationships and purposeful learning experiences are fundamental in supporting children to reach their full potential. Our EYFS provision is underpinned by a strong knowledge of child development, informed by current research, observation and ongoing professional reflection. Staff understand that development is not linear and that children progress at different rates across the prime and specific areas of learning.
Using Development Matters, we carefully plan a broad, ambitious and sequential curriculum that reflects children’s interests, prior learning and individual next steps. Staff use skilled observation to identify what children know, can do and understand, enabling us to provide responsive teaching and meaningful learning opportunities both indoors and outdoors. Assessment is ongoing and formative, informing high-quality interactions and adaptations that support all learners, including children with additional needs and those who may require targeted support.
The prime areas of learning; communication and language, personal, social and emotional development and physical development are prioritised throughout our provision because we understand that these areas form the foundations for all future learning. Staff model rich language, promote sustained shared thinking and create nurturing environments where children feel safe, confident and motivated to explore.
Development Matters also supports our strong partnership with parents and carers. We value the important role families play in children’s development and work collaboratively to share achievements, celebrate progress and support learning at home.
Our approach ensures that every child is viewed as a capable, competent learner. Through a deep understanding of child development and effective use of Development Matters, we provide a stimulating and inclusive environment where children develop the knowledge, skills and characteristics of effective learning needed for lifelong success.
