Global Citizens
Our commitment to developing global citizens sits at the heart of life at Park Road Academy. We believe that every child should leave primary school with a strong understanding of the wider world, a sense of responsibility towards others and the confidence to make a positive difference, both locally and globally.
Being a global citizen at Park Road Academy Primary School means helping children to understand diversity, respect different cultures and perspectives and develop empathy for people whose lives may be very different from our own. It is about nurturing kindness, fairness and a growing awareness of global issues such as inequality, sustainability and human rights, in ways that are meaningful and appropriate for young learners.
At Park Road Academy, this work is led by our dedicated Global Citizens Champions, alongside an enthusiastic pupil team who play an active role in promoting awareness and driving initiatives across the school. Through assemblies, themed events and curriculum links, pupils are encouraged to think beyond their immediate environment and reflect on how their actions can impact others.
We are particularly proud of our links with Uganda, where staff have had the opportunity to work alongside colleagues supporting children’s learning in the Lighthouses and delivering professional development for teachers. These experiences have strengthened our understanding of global education and allowed us to build meaningful connections with inspiring individuals who are committed to improving the lives of others. As a result, our pupils gain real insight into different communities and develop a deeper appreciation of both challenges and opportunities across the world.
Global citizenship is carefully woven throughout our curriculum. Whether through geography, PSHE or wider enrichment, pupils explore global themes, learn about different cultures and develop the skills to think critically and compassionately. Regular assemblies help to raise awareness of global issues and celebrate diversity, while encouraging pupils to reflect on their role in creating a fairer world.
As part of our commitment to languages and cultural understanding, we are currently seeking to establish a partnership with a Spanish-speaking school to enrich our Modern Foreign Languages provision. This will provide pupils with authentic opportunities to communicate, collaborate and build relationships beyond their own community.
Through these experiences, our children develop into thoughtful, informed and active global citizens—equipped not only with knowledge, but with the values and motivation to make a positive difference in the world.
