Leadership Opportunities
At Park Road Academy, leadership development is a central part of our commitment to pupils’ personal development. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to lead, influence and contribute meaningfully to school life.
Leadership at Park Road Academy begins in the classroom. From the earliest stages, pupils are given meaningful responsibilities that develop their sense of ownership and contribution. This may include leading a group task, taking responsibility for an area of the classroom, carrying out specific job roles or supporting the organisation of learning. Pupils are also given opportunities to support younger children across the school and to organise games and activities at playtimes, developing their communication, empathy and teamwork skills. In our Early Years provision, children take on the role of ‘helping hands’, supporting one another and working alongside adults through simple, purposeful responsibilities that lay the foundations for leadership.
Leadership opportunities are embedded across all year groups, ensuring that pupils experience a clear progression in responsibility and influence over time. Our structured approach ensures that, at some point during their time at Park Road Academy, every child is provided with meaningful leadership opportunities. This guarantees equity of access and ensures that all pupils develop leadership skills, not just a selected few.
In Year 6, pupils take on key leadership roles such as prefects and members of enterprise teams. Prefects act as role models for younger pupils, demonstrating high standards of behaviour, organisation and responsibility. Our enterprise teams provide meaningful opportunities for pupils to develop financial awareness, teamwork and problem-solving through real-life contexts, strengthening both leadership and entrepreneurial skills.
Across the school, pupils contribute to decision-making through an active school council and a pupil Senior Leadership Team (SLT). These groups play a significant role in shaping school improvement by gathering pupil voice, contributing ideas and working alongside staff on whole-school priorities. As a result, pupils develop confidence in expressing their views, understanding democratic processes and recognising that their contributions can lead to real change.
Subject ambassadors further enhance this provision by promoting enthusiasm and engagement within specific areas of the curriculum. These pupils support learning, share knowledge with peers and contribute to the development of their subject areas, helping to foster a culture of academic leadership.
Our sports leaders, who gain recognised qualifications, play an important role in promoting physical activity and supporting younger pupils during lessons and playtimes. Through this, they develop communication skills, teamwork and a sense of responsibility, while also contributing to the wellbeing of others.
Additional opportunities such as debate club and our student parliament enable pupils to develop critical thinking, articulate their opinions and engage respectfully with different viewpoints. These experiences strengthen pupils’ oracy skills, confidence and understanding of leadership within a wider societal context.
Importantly, our leadership offer is fully inclusive. All pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged backgrounds, are actively encouraged and supported to take on leadership roles. This ensures equity of opportunity and enables every child to develop their voice and potential.
As a result of this coherent, progressive and inclusive approach, pupils at Park Road Academy demonstrate high levels of confidence, responsibility and independence. They are able to communicate effectively, lead and collaborate with others and take initiative in a range of contexts. Over time, pupils develop a secure understanding of leadership and its impact, leaving our school as articulate, responsible and proactive individuals who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education and for life beyond school.
