Reading

Reading is fundamental, in fact it is one of the most important ingredients to becoming all that you can be!

Reading develops your brain, provides a window into the world around you and helps you to do better in all subjects.

“The whole world opened up to me when I learned to read” – Mary McCleod Bethune

Once upon a time...

At Park Road Academy we love books! We aim for all our children to develop a love of listening to stories, reading stories and becoming confident and imaginative story tellers.

Reading Curriculum Impact ...

We believe that reading is key to all learning, the impact of our reading curriculum goes beyond the result of statutory assessments. Our children are provided opportunities to experience the awe and wonder that reading opens up to them.

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, through the teaching of systematic phonics and reading enquiry, our children flourish and become fluent and confident readers. In Key Stage 2, children begin to develop their own preferences about reading and are able to apply their knowledge and experience to a range of texts through the Key Stage 2 curriculum.

We aspire that all children leave Park Road Academy as fluent, confident and able readers, who have become life-long readers for pleasure, and who have progressed from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’

Phonics - Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised.

At Park Road Academy Primary School, we believe that for all of our children to become fluent readers and writers, phonics must be taught through a systematic and structured phonics programme. We use Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised.

Bonding Over Reading Journals

Reading together is crucial for a child’s development and inspires children to learn from one another!

Here at Park Road each class has a Bonding Over Reading book which is taken home by a child on a weekly basis. Children are encouraged to share one of their favourite books with a friend or family member and write a recommendation to encouraging others to read.   Have a look at some suggestions...What will you read next!

Olly and Lilly

Our EYFS and KS1 children enjoyed talking and listening to the story of Olly and Lilly. This book help the children to understand different family types, their own and their friends situations. It also allowed the children to explore feelings and emotions and to openly ask questions about family life.
